Essential Energy - Electrical Safety Rules - Initial

Description

The course is designed for NSW Service Providers and provides the learners with the necessary knowledge of the electricity supply industry (ESI) safety rules and codes of practice for work on or near electrical apparatus, and understand procedures to gain access for work on or near electrical network infrastructure.

This initial program is required for Essential Energy accreditation and authorisation.

This initial course (approved by Essential Energy) meets the requirements of the Essential Energy Electrical Safety Rules (ESR) reference CEOP8030.

It applies ESI Safety Rules, Codes of Practice and enterprise-based procedures for Work on or Near Electrical Apparatus for Essential Energy. The ESR governs Essential Energy’s work practices to ensure all employees or persons, including visitors and contractors, comply with Essential Energy’s safety policies and procedures. A safe workplace is everyone’s responsibility.

This initial course is intended to complement your own experience and knowledge of working safely around electricity.

Course aim

This Competency Standard Unit covers the knowledge and application of Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) safety rules and codes of practice for work on or near electrical apparatus.

It includes the application of safety rules, codes of practice and enterprise based procedures and how they apply in the context of distribution work functions. It encompasses responsibilities for, health, safety and risk management processes at all operative levels and adherence to safety practices as part of the normal way of doing work.

Target learner group

The Essential Energy ESR (Initial) applies to all persons, employees, contractors and Accredited Service Providers (ASP) working on or near HV and LV electrical apparatus associated with Essential Energy’s electrical network.

Learning activities

  • Trainer led classroom presentations
  • Theory assessment
  • Practical exercises and assessment

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course a participant will be able to:

  • Understand and apply relevant safety rules, codes of practice and procedures
  • Identify and obtain hazards and risk control measures for specific work functions/areas
  • Understand and correctly apply the requirement for access authority/work permits required for work from appropriate personnel in accordance with established procedures
  • Prepare, assess and monitor safety systems and equipment for work to minimise and control hazards
  • Understand and correctly follow workplace procedures and work instructions for controlling risk
  • Follow specific workplace systems and equipment isolation procedures
  • Identify restricted workplace areas including ingress and egress procedures
  • Understand and Identify Safe Approach Distance procedures.

Equipment & PPE

Learners are required to have the following to participate in this course:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. Hard Hat, Safety Footwear, Approved Hi-Vis Clothing, Safety Glasses)
  • Stationary (e.g. Pen, Pencil, etc.)

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment (e.g. Short Answer Questions, Multiple Choice, Verbal Questioning Interview)
  • Practical Assessment (e.g. Workplace Simulated and Scenario)

Course Entry Requirements

To participate in this course, learners are required to:

  • be literate in spoken English and competent in reading, writing, and numeracy.

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
