Course aim

The course is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to enable them to perform entry into confined spaces, work and operate equipment in confined spaces and undertake rescue operations.

Target learner group

The target learners for this course are employees who are required to work in confined spaces within the wind power generation industry (e.g. blade repair technicians, basement entry, hub entry). This includes employees of network asset owners, contractors and sub-contractors in electricity Generation, Transmission and Distribution.

Those who work on the network must maintain currency of skills and competency in a range of safety and technical procedures.

Most learners will be licensed and trade qualified or hold a Certificate in a related technical discipline. In addition to trade qualifications, the learner groups will have completed a range of electrical and plant safety related training programs related to the roles they hold.

Learning activities

  • Trainer led classroom presentations
  • Theory assessment
  • Onsite practical exercises and assessment

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes include:

  • Identifying confined spaces;
  • Identification and control of confined space hazards using the hierarchy of hazard controls;
  • Understanding of Australian Standards and relevant legislation;
  • Roles and responsibilities of management and employees;
  • Work according to a confined space permit;
  • Understanding of work site policies and procedures.

Outcomes for working within a Confined Space include:

  • Practical entry into a confined space;
  • Requirements for a standby person when working within a confined space;
  • Ventilation and gas monitoring requirements for working within a confined space;
  • Lock Out Tag Out procedures;
  • Implications of introducing hazardous substances (e.g. chemicals) when working within a confined space;
  • Atmospheric Monitoring and Gas Detection;
  • Understanding of basic principles of gas testers;
  • Safety and emergency procedures;
  • Rescue Equipment (e.g. Vertical Extraction Devices (VED), Stretchers).

Equipment & PPE

Learners are required to have the following to participate in this course:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. Hard Hat, Safety Footwear, Approved Hi-Vis Clothing, Safety Glasses)
  • Stationary (e.g. Pen, Pencil, etc.)

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment (e.g. Short Answer Questions, Multiple Choice, Verbal Questioning Interview)
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment (e.g. Workplace, Simulated Environment, Role Play/Scenario)

Course Entry Requirements

To participate in this course, learners are required to:

  • have suitable English language skills in reading and writing, as well as numeracy skills to meet the course requirements
  • have a level of physical fitness to participate in practical activities

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
