Background

In South Australia, the Public Transport Services business (which is part of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure “DPTI”), is responsible for the operation and regulation of the passenger transport network, including bus, train and tram services.

The High Voltage operations for the Train and Tram network is serviced by three high voltage technician roles as follows:

  • Overhead Linesmen
  • Traction Power Workers (TPW)
  • Electrical Control Officers (ECO)

DPTI had identified a number of H.V. technicians that could be recognised for their prior training and experience, and be awarded a number of nationally accredited units of competency.

Our role

Thomson Bridge developed and employed a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework for the PTSs H.V. technicians. Engagement with the PTS candidates against the RPL Framework resulted in the awarding of a number of relevant units of competency, which will provide the candidates with nationally recognised skill sets and competencies, that in turn provide a pathway to nationally recognised qualifications.

The RPL framework was designed to be flexible and time efficient. The required evidence gathering was scheduled to accommodate work and time commitments for each candidate and included a variety of techniques including:

  • Practical Assessments
  • Employee Interviews
  • Assessing all completed courses by the candidates, mapping against U.O.C. requirements
  • Gathering of relevant licenses, qualifications and other evidence
